2020 Recap
Great weather, first class facilities, twenty college coaches and over one hundred of the regions most talented lacrosse players from the class of 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 set the stage for a great day of lacrosse at the Southern Virginia Showcase. Held on the turf fields at the Smith River Complex in Axton, Virginia, the morning session saw players put through individual position and small group training led by the SOVA Showcase college staff. The two hours of intense, college level training allowed the coaching staff the opportunity to interact with the players on an individual level and provide non-stop instruction. Jamie Legg, one of the directors of the event put on by Carolina Event Management, made a point that, “not only did we want to provide an excellent platform for player exposure and recruitment, but also felt an intense morning skill session ensured each player left a better lacrosse player than when they started the day.” Finishing up with live 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3s indicated that the level of intensity on the day was going to be high heading into the afternoon game sessions.
Following a short lunch break, players were broken into teams each with an assigned college coaching staff and each team would have the opportunity to play four games on the afternoon. Each game was filmed, and put on live stream by video partner CruitCast with film provided to every participant of the event. “Given the current landscape of recruiting and value of film we felt it was extremely important not only to provide players with their game film for highlights and personal study, but also live stream it for any coach unable to attend the event,” Legg noted. Between the morning sessions with individual and small group instruction, and the afternoon of live full-field games, college coaches had plenty of opportunity to get to know the players at the event, build connections, and leave with a notebook full of potential recruits for their programs.
